Problem With Lake Olympia Fire Protection System Continues--according to our sources--

Several e-mails a week come into the watch site regarding ongoing issues in the school district. We are sharing this one publically while protecting the source for obvious reasons:

"It has come to my attention that Lake Olympia Middle School has not had a functional fire alarm system since Friday, October 2, 2009. The children at Lake Olympia Middle School have not had a functional alarm system for five full days. Instead, FBISD has been forced, by the fire marshal, to have a fire watch placed on the school to ensure the safety of the children. The safety of FBISD children has to be ensured by the wonderful men and women of the fire departments, since our school district support manager..., has not done her due diligence and cannot guarantee our children's safety. "

This issue was first covered by local media, but the system apparently has remained down. We received this update last night via e-mail:

"As we speak, the alarm system is still down at Lake Olympia MS. Now, I do not think it reasonable that 2 weeks is the required time to repair the fire alarm system."

Obviously something needs to be done. A fire watch has been ordered by the fire marshalls office and this can be a very expensive endeavor as well as unnecessary if the system were immediately fixed or replaced. This is not a safe situation for the children, families or employees of LOMS.

When will senior administration and the school board act on this crisis?

We will update this story as needed...
